Joyce was awarded the Unsung Hero Award at the June meeting.
Quoting Leaderonomics an unsung hero has 5 common characteristics
1) Humility 2) Empathy 3) Committed to a cause
4) Consistent excellence and teamwork 5) Courage to do the right thing
Flabergasted. That was Joyce’s reaction to being chosen the Unsung Hero for Almond Country Quilt Guild this year. “I just did what needed to be done.”
Her introduction to quilting and the comradery that accompanied happened when she retired. She loves people and found when not working, she had the time and energy to become involved to do all that hadn’t fit in her previous schedule… Joyce had sewn for many years but quilting was new to her. She credits a local quilt shop and the friendly women that lured her into quilting. She discovered she enjoyed it and was a natural . With the enjoyment of the guild came the needs of a working organization. Joyce volunteered her time and energy to multiple areas such as Kids
Covers, The Library, various Quilt Shows, teaching classes, picking up prizes from merchants up and down the valley for door prizes. Joyce acknowledges the cleaning of the “SHED” where all the supplies (stuff) of the various units of the guild were stored was the least appealing. Gathered with volunteers on a Saturday it was accomplished with laughter and lunch.
Joyce truly meets the criteria of The Unsung Hero. Humble, empathetic, committed, consistent excellence and teamwork, and the courage to do the right thing.
Great article, thanks.
